Sash Weights

Sash weights can be changed to improve the performance of your window sash and reduce the energy cost. Sash weights are heavy lead or iron cylinders that are enclosed in a hidden cavity and attached to the movable sash by a rope. They are counterbalancers that allows the window to be opened and closed without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. The sash-weights are typically neglected or www.repairmywindowsanddoors.co.uk ignored by homeowners and then turned into scrap when they fail; therefore you may have to search for replacements.

It's difficult to retrieve the sash-weight that fell from the cavity, so you'll need to find one that fits correctly. You will also require an additional piece of string, a length of sash cord, and a few sash pulleys to connect the new sash weights onto the sash cord.

Older windows made of wood are joined with mortise and tenon joints. Pin punch and hammer can be used to cut off the wood pegs that hold the components together. Most of them have large diameters on one side and a smaller diameter on the other, so it is important to remove the smaller-diameter sides first. Later sashes used glue instead of pins. They can be separated by using a knife or mallets.

After the sash is released, you can remove the sash stops and access the weight pockets. This is usually done via an opening at the bottom of each jamb. This hole is covered with the wooden panel which can be removed to reveal the inner workings.

After you have the sash stopped and the access panel removed, you'll be able to remove the weight of the old sash and replace it with the new. After the new weight has been installed, you can thread an appropriate length of string through the pulling mechanism. Then, you can attach the string to the boxed frame. Leave a few inches of space at the end of the string to allow for future adjustments.

Sash Cords

The majority of double-hung windows with a history include a chain or cord attached to the weights that supports and keeps the sashes balanced in the jamb. As time passes, these cords may break, making it impossible to raise the window. A new sash cable can restore the ability to move and lower the sash and ensure it stays in place when opened.

The first step to replace sash cords is to find and take out the access panels located in the jambs. These are usually screwed or nailed into and need to be removed. You might be able to employ a hammer and chisel for removing them however, it is always best to lay down dust sheets prior to beginning any work.

After the access panel has been removed, you can start working on the sash. Use a flat bar or chisel, to pry the narrow parting beads out of their grooves. They are typically wedged into or nailed, but they can be removed, so it's worth taking your time here. If the sash remains in place, break the mortise and tenon joints using the help of a hammer and pin or screwdriver, then unhook the wood pegs that are on the components. The sash should be able move freely, however it may require some lubrication to feel less stiff.

With the sash in an open position Take a measurement of the sash chain to extend from the pulley on the top of the jamb to the sash slot at the bottom. Cut the cord or chain and fix it as described in Step 6 above. You can use either a hammer, nails or screws. However nails are less likely than screws to cause damage.

Glass-Replacement-150x150.jpgIt is recommended to keep the original weights if you have purchased a kit that will replace the counterbalance. It's cheap to purchase them from architectural salvage stores and they'll be simple to install once you've got the sash opened.
